Florentine genius Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Art is never finished, only abandoned.” While this poetic observation bears a degree of truth, work by Sage Raval proves, in some ways, just the opposite. Collecting castoff mailing and packaging materials, discarded wrapping, and other items deemed mere scraps, she repurposes them as artwork, hand-stitching the various elements together.
Having had the chance to see Raval’s creations in their full glory at various Trunkshow events in the Los Angeles area, the evocative, multi-dimensional layers virtually leap from their frames, depicting natural scenery, cozy interiors, and, our favorite, a sprawling paper and thread representation of the Hollywood hills in serene neutral tones. Both an artist and educator, she counts among her fans notable figures Cindy Crawford and Tea Leoni. With admirers of such distinguished ilk, Raval’s art is generating an excited buzz among environmentalist aesthetes—buzz that we happily encourage.
