Dive into the Perfect Eco-Vacation
Date: April 3, 2007 | Category: Travel
Though I have always been adventurous and never thought that I would be predictible, I find it impossible to stay away from one sensational spot (it doesn’t help that my children continually pester me to take them back). Every year my husband, our two small children and I make the pilgrimage to Fiji…with 25-30 friends. The Jean Michel Cousteau Resort is absolutely our favorite place to spend our precious annual holiday. The long flight is quickly forgotten when you are greeted by the smiles and generosity of the world’s most friendly natives. Known for its stellar diving of the soft coral capital of the world, even novices and non-divers find themselves entranced (half our cadre remains above water). The beautifully appointed bures (individual thatched houses) respect local building practices and utilize Fiji’s own sustainable resources. The villa is so spectacular that it has been nominated as one of the best villas in the world! The warm and wonderful natives keep everything running…perfectly. Their childcare providers are caring and fun. Bula Camp (their kid’s program) makes taking a personal break guilt free. And though parents will be giddy, Jean Michel Cousteau Resort is also known as honeymoon heaven - The main pool is kid-free and there is plenty of privacy. Reef walks and boat excursions are exhilarating and informative. And the food. Oh the food. The Indian-influenced fusion cuisine is to be envied internationally. All meals are included in room rates, which is a very good thing. You can experiment with the fresh catches of the day and locally grown veggies and roots. You will want to sample all of their savories and it is nearly impossible to ignore the world class deserts. Though the wine list is excellent, replenish your fluids with the on-premises filtered water. Besides employing locals and keeping their sustainable traditions alive, the resort helps to protect and revive the surrounding sea. On that note, please purchase offsets when you book your flight to help balance out the fuel burned in getting there.
