Raising the Bar
Date: March 28, 2009 | Category: Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Travel

New Yorkers like to think they’re a step ahead of the rest, and now they have proof: In a sign of what’s surely to come, the city is now home to the first – and only, at least for the time being – USDA certified bar in the world.
Pull up a stool at Gustorganics and you’ll find not only the standards in organic form – mojitos, margaritas and martinis are all present and accounted for – but also inventive cocktails like the Suavecito, a blend of vodka, fresh peaches, squeezed orange juice, agave and ice. If we had to play favorites, though, our loyalties would lie with the Banano and its combination of white rum, fresh banana, dulce de leche and milk.
Two vegetable-based cocktails, one starring cucumber and the other basil, are also available in case you skipped that salad at lunch. But why not opt for a full meal instead? Conveniently enough, Gustorganics is also home to a 100% organic restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. We skipped the filet mignon and, in typical New York fashion, went right for the thin-crust, crispy pizza, topped with pesto, grilled vegetables, mozzarella and parmesan cheese. It met our high standards and then some.
The restaurant and bar, located just west of Union Square, is green behind the scenes too. It uses wind energy, solar lighting, biodegradable take out containers, and composts any food waste. Oh, and that stool you’re sitting on? It’s made from reclaimed wood.
