Patagonia Takes the Road Less Traveled

Patagonia has launched a line of jackets made entirely of recycled materials, which makes them green as the founder of the famously environmentally-forward outdoorsy line of clothing and accessories.

Made of 100 percent recycled polyester, these hip-length shells in styles for men and women (the women’s style is shown above) are waterproof enough to fend off rain and have a mesh liner that wicks moisture away from the body and protects against the wind. Both styles have removable hoods and lots of pockets for stashing all the stuff you’ll need on the trail or for a day out running errands in less than balmy weather.

The jackets are recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program and the company has created a link on its site that allows you to research the complete footprint of the item before you buy it, including the number of miles the item has traveled; its CO2 emissions; the amount of waste created in making it and energy used in its creation.

Let’s just hope more companies decide to take Patagonia’s pre-blazed path.

Don’t Be a Boob: Recycle Your Tube

It seems like every time we turn on the television lately we are warned that in the near future it might not work at all thanks to the upcoming switchover from analog to digital television. All the warnings made us wonder: What is going to happen to all of these useless televisions come February?

Short answer is that they will end up in landfills unless otherwise planned for. ASL Recycling to the rescue. The company organizes GREENspots in California where people can drop off televisions, computers, microwaves, DVD players and other electronics for recycling. This year alone ALS Recycling has processed more that 8 million pounds of waste that would have otherwise wound up in a landfill.

While ASL is currently only operating in California, it is ever-expanding, with 150 GREENspots currently operating. So when it is time to unplug the television and replace it with a new one, plug in your zip code on the ASL website and find out where you can safely drop the old dinosaur off.

The City of Angels Earns Its Wings

The red carpet got striped in green last weekend with the launch of Designers & Agents’ First Annual Green Market Event. Held from October 17th to 19th, D&A played host to more than a thousand leaders in sustainable fashion, design, lifestyle and community, including some of our fav designers, Form & Fauna, Edun, Stewart + Brown and Loomstate, and our friends over at Inhabitat who chatted up visitors in the “Green Room.” Co-hosted by contemporary furnishings guru, FordBrady, the trade show also marked the debut of Coco Eco Magazine by Anna Griffin.

Designers who wished to participate in the event had to demonstrate that at least 60 percent of their product line was made through sustainable practices. To offset the carbon footprint of those traveling from afar, a tree was planted in honor of each registered guest. Green Market Co-founders, Barbara Kramer and Ed Mandelbaum, hope the synergy created from bringing so much talent together under one living roof will inspire more fashion-forward businesses to grow from the root up.

A Drink to Your Face

Short of soaking in a pool of wine (which doesn’t sound half bad), there’s nothing like grapeseed oil for smoothing away fine lines and inebriating our skin in luscious antioxidents. Grapeseed Company has bottled this miracle elixir into a potent, plant-derived skincare collection.

Created from by-products of the wine-making process along with vitamin-rich ingredients, like damask rose and lavender, the line is 80 percent organic. Designed to rejuvenate and plump the skin, the five-step regimen includes a facial wash, toner, pure grape seed oil, skin serum and moisturizing lotion. So if your love of the vine knows no bounds, you can sink your skin into supple without the attendant hangover.

Branch Into Olives

If you’ve ever daydreamed about owning a Tuscan olive grove, well, we can’t really help you out there. However, we can offer the next new thing in culinary staycations! Adopt one of Nudo’s Italian olive trees for a year, and you’ll receive all of its luscious produce. Imagine dunking your bread into your very own oil harvested fresh from a Mediterranean hillside.

For about $85, you’ll get an arboreal adoption certificate along with all the intimate details a loving parent wants to know about their baby’s history. Over the course of the year, you’ll receive two more care packages from abroad, one in the spring and one in the autumn, each containing the oil made from your tree and the olives of 50 of its closest friends and neighbors.

So if a family trip to Italy is not in the offing this year, why not welcome a tasty Italian visitor instead!
