Clean Hair, Clean Air
Date: December 4, 2006 | Category: Beauty
I used to tease my snobby friends that claimed they could only get their hair cut in New York. But after returning to the Bay Area with a new do that garnered compliments galore and a fresh appreciation for clean air, I cannot imagine spending an hour inhaling ammonia for a little slice of mediocrity. The John Masters experience was so sublime that I plan on waiting until House and Garden business takes me back to Manhattan and even dealing with the awkward length in order to feel truly ecofabulous.
John Masters Organics is New York’s only clean air salon, so bottled blondes and perm queens will have to steer clear or go for a more natural look…and smell. For once brunettes come out on top. As a popular hairdresser, Masters began concocting his own organic formulations in his kitchen 18 years ago when he realized that his work life wasn’t lining up with his healthy home lifestyle. Though he no longer shares his sink with ingredients for conditioners, he maintains his commitment to delicious organic products.
The ingredients are still all natural and actually work…REALLY well. You will have to get used to the less-lathering shampoo but you certainly won’t miss the suds when you are fielding all of the compliments on your hair. I would like to keep my secret weapon secret but I simply must share: the deep scalp follicle treatment is outstanding for those of us that lack natural volume. Stay tuned, as I will periodically post about other specific products, because they are that good. And though going to Master’s hip and healthy little salon is a treat to be savored, his masterpieces can now be found at places like Whole Foods. Just look for the salon line that looks too sleek to be good for you.

I think you’ve spotted a trend in the making! Here in the Bay Area, I go to the East Bay’s only “clean air” (and green-certified) salon: Nina Homisak on Solano Ave. in Albany. Nina doesn’t (yet) have her own product line-she uses Modern Organic Products-but she does superb cuts and styling in, yes, an ammonia-free environment.

Wow, I’ve never heard of “clean air” salons before, but they definitely sound like they’re worth a try!
